American workers have carried out some of the most massive, determined and combative struggles in the world. Implicit in some of these struggles were revolutionary possibilities: 1877, 1919, the 1930s, and the 1960s, when the struggle of the black population pulled the whole working class into widespread fights. And yet in none of these fights did the working class put itself forward as a distinct class, with its own class-wide organizations, its own answers to the problems created by capitalist society for the vast majority of people. In none of these fights, did the working class step forward as a class that demonstrated its capacity to run the whole society -- and its will to do it. Why didn't that happen in these earlier struggles? What was missing? What can be done today to prepare for the next wave of struggle, so all the possibilities are realized?
