The SPARK presents "A Country Born & Reared in Slavery"
April 20, 1537, Spanish "explorers" set out with 50 kidnapped Africans to settle in Florida, then a Spanish colony. The Africans came in chains. August 20, 1619, 20 kidnapped Africans arrived in Virginia, part of English North America. They were sold as slaves to a tobacco planter. For almost 332 years, slavery was a legal fact, dominating every aspect of human life, North and South. The phenomenal wealth produced in the slave trade and from slave labor provided the basis on which American capitalism grew up and spread. The peculiar form under which all labor is exploited today in this country traces back to the way slave labor was organized. The legacy of slavery lives with us still -- how could it not? Legal emancipation happened only 154 years ago.
