SATURDAY, JULY 23RD 7PM - THE WASTELANDS Children of the Wild, a nomadic theatre and film ensemble, is holding a free performance of their original, traveling folk opera The Wastelands, in Mackinaw City, MI at the McGulpin Point Lighthouse, Saturday July 23 at 7pm. A re-imagining of Dante Alighieri’s masterpiece Purgatorio, The Wastelands takes audiences on an outdoor, visceral journey through the seven stages of grief, weaving music, movement, imagery and local testimony into an experience of the landscape itself. The performance runs 90 minutes. It is free, open to the public, and meets ADA standards of accessibility. The performance is outdoors, involves walking, and proceeds rain or shine; please bring good walking shoes, a chair you can carry if you desire, and an umbrella if it looks like rain.

SUNDAY, JULY 24TH 1-3PM - COMMUNITY BIKE RIDE On Sunday, July 24, at 1pm Bike the Line, a cavalcade of bike riders following the path of Enbridge’s controversial Line 5 oil pipeline, are converging in Mackinaw City with Children of the Wild and Great Lakes Commons. At 1pm, Bike the Line is holding a 10-mile loop community bike ride to begin and end at McGulpin Point Lighthouse (500 Headlands Road, Mackinaw City, MI). The public is invited and expected to bring their own bicycle and helmet. (Also, two riders with Bike the Line will be available starting noon to help participating folks with minor repairs and tune-ups!) Participants will bike along the straits and through downtown Mackinaw City, learning about the movement to shut down Line 5.

SUNDAY, JULY 24TH 3-6PM - BEYOND LINE 5 A picnic and expansive conversation that explores new and ancient ways of protecting the Great Lakes, tapping into our inner resilience, and moving beyond the paradigm of oil and gas. With presentations by Children of the Wild, Bike the Line, Frank Ettawageshik, former Tribal Chairman of the Little Bay Bands of Odawa Indians, and Great Lakes Commons. Bring a picnic dish to share and a blanket to sit on. Dress for weather and the outdoors.

Everything is going down at McGulpin Point Lighthouse 500 Headlands Rd, Mackinaw City, Michigan 49701. All are welcome and all events are free!
