Description of the talk: "The Community Rights Movement: A Grassroots Strategy to Protect our Climate" Climate Change is real, and our state and federal governments are not responding. Fossil fuel projects, backed by big money, continue to be approved by our elected officials. Why are we limited to protests and public hearings to protect our communities? Do the regulatory agencies even take our concerns into consideration when making their decisions? In this talk, Paul Cienfuegos will introduce the Community Rights movement, review why Minnesota structures of law make it so difficult for residents to protect their communities from corporate harm, and outline how We the People of Minnesota can breathe new life into civic engagement by reclaiming the structures of law that have made real democracy impossible until now. The Community Rights movement offers a bold solution for protecting our right to a livable climate, a just society, and a sustainable future through the creation of locally-enforceable, rights-based laws. These laws strip corporations of their so-called constitutional "rights", ban harmful corporate activities, and enshrine the right of a community to govern itself. Community Rights recognizes and enforces the inherent power and rights of local communities to protect themselves against harmful corporate practices. This strategy can be applied toward protection of clean water, earth, and air, the right to safe and just labor conditions, sustainable development, and more. Community Rights works by creating local ordinances that affirm what communities DO want, rather than fighting unwanted projects and practices one at a time. Community Rights is a national movement. Since 1999, locally-enforceable rights-based laws have been passed by over 200 communities in 9 states. Community Rights is a non-partisan, unifying movement, including people from all sides of the political spectrum. “We the People” do have the authority to pass laws that serve the people and the planet. Let's get organized! About the speaker: Paul Cienfuegos is a leader in the Community Rights movement, which works to dismantle corporate constitutional so-called “rights” and assert the people's inherent right to govern themselves. He has been leading workshops, giving public talks, and organizing local communities since 1995 when he founded Democracy Unlimited in northern California. Since 2011, he has lived in Portland, Oregon, where he co-founded CommunityRightsPDX.org, and helped establish the Oregon Community Rights Network which launched in 2013. His talks have been broadcast nationally on David Barsamian's show, 'Alternative Radio'. He recently launched a weekly radio commentary that any station can broadcast at no charge.
