Admiral Michelle Howard broke down barriers and made history during her 35-year career in the U.S. Navy, and she will share her story as the keynote speaker for Inforum’s 57th Annual Meeting on June 4. Tickets remain available for the event, slated for 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. at The Henry, Autograph Collection, located at 300 Town Center Drive in Dearborn. Inforum, a nonprofit striving to build gender equity in business leadership, will also host a simulcast of the event at Amway headquarters in Grand Rapids. Tickets for the event may be purchased through Inforum’s website. Howard was the first woman to achieve the rank of four-star admiral in the U.S. Navy. In 1999, she became the first African American woman to command a U.S. naval warship when she took the helm of the USS Rushmore, and she was the first African American woman to lead a U.S. Navy battle group when in 2009 she took command of Expeditionary Strike Group Two. Howard planned the 2009 mission to rescue Capt. Richard Phillips from Somali pirates who seized his cargo ship at the Gulf of Aden, depicted in the 2013 film “Captain Phillips.”
