Join us in protest of the School of Nursing’s unjust treatment of Michelle by standing together in protest as we present this case at the next regent’s meeting. From the LEO website: "Michelle O’Grady has taught in the School of Nursing as an LIV for almost nineteen years, most of those full time. This past Fall she was on medical leave. When she returned in January, there were many miscommunications by the School about her assignment for the winter, which caused confusion for everyone. Without consulting anybody, the School decided to put her back on medical leave and referred her to an office at the University called Work Connections, which handles transitions from medical leaves, in order to assess when she could return to work. That was January 14th.... On at least four separate occasions Michelle’s physicians have confirmed she is ready to return to work. Each time Work Connections has demanded more testing. In the absence of any medical evidence that she is too ill to work, it has become Michelle’s obligation to prove she is in fact as healthy as her doctors say she is. This in itself is a serious abuse of power. In the middle of all this, the School decided to lay her off effective June 1. The School will no doubt claim programmatic change – it just so happens that suddenly her courses will need to be taught by tenure track faculty. We don’t believe it for a second! By terminating her employment, the School has essentially cut her off at the knees. Unless she is called back to work (which appears doubtful), she will no longer be eligible for sick pay, or retirement benefits, or disability, if necessary. We believe this is age discrimination, as well as a violation of the Americans with Disability Act and will file a grievance on those grounds. " Over 500 supporters signed the “Justice for Michelle” petition and many of Michelle’s students and colleagues communicated their outrage at her treatment directly to the School of Nursing. Since then, the School of Nursing has repeatedly offered the same pitiful settlement which is entirely insufficient towards making Michelle whole. The school has not been willing to make progress towards a reasonable settlement so it is time to bring this egregious situation to the UM Regents. We’ve waited long enough! http://www.petitionbuzz.com/petitions/stand-with-michelle- http://www.leounion.org/index.php/news/289-lecturers-demand-justice-in-truly-appalling-case http://www.facebook.com/events/1854246991466461/
